A young woman bends forward, as if to smell a flower—only to reveal that it is, in fact, a heart. Her form is rendered with striking economy: the right hand emerges almost abstractly from the torso, while her hair is loosely suggested through scratched, gestural lines against the dark background.

The piece carries an air of spontaneity, hinting that Edvard Munch may have approached it with little premeditation - more as an intuitive exploration than a carefully planned composition. The application of color appears secondary, and the visible marks and wear suggest it wasn’t treated with the same reverence as his finished oil works. It likely began as a study or experiment, created in a moment of creative freedom, long before the weight of his legacy turned even such raw pieces into significant works of art.
